Martin de Porres House of Hospitality

Mission Statement:

At Martin's, it's just home on a much larger, less insular level.

We do the shopping, preparation and clean up after ourselves; just like at home.

We do it for our brothers and sisters that we don't get to see all that often, who aren't able to fend for themselves.

The Martin Experience is transcendental- no matter how tired you are afterwards, you always 'glow,' brushed by the wings of the Spirit. All are welcome.

Schedule Information:

We join with the Parish from Saint Gregory on the third Satuday of every month.

From 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. includes preparation through clean up, and you can join us for the first or second half of this great experience.

Location: 225 Potrero Avenue (at 16th Street), San Francisco, CA 94107 415-552-0240

History:

Martin de Porres House of Hospitality was created in 1971 as a soup kitchen to serve free food to homeless and hungry people. It was started by a priest and some lay people as a Catholic Worker House to be part of the CW movement initiated in the 1930's by Dorothy Day.

The primary purpose of the CW movement was and is to put into practice the "works of mercy." After 33 years and millions of meals, the folks at Martin's continue to serve good, healthful meals to hundreds of guests, seven days a week with the help of volunteers.

The name "House of Hospitality" denotes Martin's basic philosophy: the poor and hungry that come to eat are treated as honored guests. Volunteer kitchen staffs welcome all visitors with respect, and work to maintain a clean and calm environment. Guests enjoy a garden, sun-deck and large dining room.
